Twinning - Agen
On 1st July, 1989, at a ceremony held in the Selwyn Samuel Centre, Llanelli Town formally entered into a twinning link with the important French town of Agen, situated in the Lot-et-Garonne Department, with a reciprocal signing ceremony in Agen on 8th April, 1990. The Lot-et-Garonne Department is one of the leading French departments for the production of fruits and vegetables, with specialities including Agen plums, Marmande tomatoes, melons from Nerac, wines from the Buzet and Duras slopes, and asparagus from Fargues.
The Town of Agen is situated between Toulouse and Bordeaux, with a population of approximately 35,000 inhabitants. The town has also entered into twinning links with Tuapse (Russia), Toledo (Spain), Dinslaken (Germany) and Corpus Christi (Texas, USA).
The main industry is agriculture, and the town boasts the sixth largest distribution centre in France for marketing fruit and vegetables. It also has a large weekly livestock market. Local produce is mainly vegetables, but the area is famous for its superb prunes and Armagnac, a cognac-type beverage.
There are excellent recreational facilities for a range of sports including tennis, swimming, cycling, athletics, football and rugby.
The development of the twinning link since 1989 has seen the establishment of many firm links between counterpart organisations, with the most important of these being the annual school exchanges.
