Llanelli Town Centre has undergone a major transformation in recent years.
In 1992 the pedestrianised area of Vaughan Street and Stepney Street was
completely re-paved with York stone paving and attractive wide glass canopies
were erected in front of the shops in this area, providing improved weather
protection for shops and shoppers alike.
During the late 1990's a major redevelopment took place
which saw the extension of the central town area to accomodate the modern
St. Elli shopping centre, which accomodates a variety of retail units
as well as the ASDA supermarket, all served by ample surface car parking.
The new shopping centre immediately adjoins the town's covered market
which offers a range of fresh produce and other products under one roof.
The present market was built in 1968, but the market origins date back
to the 13th century. On the traditional market days of Thursday and
Saturday the pedestrianised area becomes the location for an open-air
market with its many colourful stalls offering goods of various descriptions.
The long-awaited
redevelopment of Upper Park Street is now imminent, with the relected
developers, Henry Davidson Developments Limited, charged with bringing
it to fruition by 2008. This
will revitalise a part of the town which had become an eyesore and bring
more retail choice for shoppers to enjoy.
